Safety distance requirements for distribution boxes

Distribution boxes require a minimum of 3 feet front clearance, 30 inches side clearance, and 6½ feet vertical clearance to ensure safe operation and maintenance.Front, Side, and Vertical Clearances

For safe access and maintenance, distribution boxes must have a dedicated working space that is free of obstructions. The standard clearances are:

  • Front clearance: Minimum of 3 feet (36 inches) from the face of the equipment to allow personnel to stand and work safely, including opening doors at least 90 degrees .
  • Side clearance: Minimum of 30 inches, or the width of the equipment if greater, to provide lateral working space .
  • Vertical clearance: Minimum headroom of 6½ feet (78 inches) or the height of the equipment, whichever is taller, to allow safe maneuvering and tool use . These clearances are critical to protect personnel from electrical hazards such as arc flashes and to ensure that maintenance can be performed without obstruction .
Dedicated Space and Protection

OSHA requires that switchboards, panelboards, and distribution boards be installed in dedicated spaces and protected from damage. The dedicated space should extend from the floor to 6 feet above the equipment or to the structural ceiling, whichever is lower, and must be free from other equipment or materials that could interfere with access . If the equipment is exposed to vehicular traffic or pedestrian activity, additional protection such as physical barriers or enclosures may be necessary to prevent accidental contact or damage .

Industrial and Terminal Block Spacing

For power distribution blocks in industrial control panels, spacing requirements depend on voltage and UL standards:

  • 1 inch through air and 2 inches over surface at 600V for feeder circuits .
  • Terminal blocks must comply with UL1059 and power distribution blocks with UL1953, ensuring adequate spacing for safe field wiring and short-circuit protection . These spacing requirements prevent accidental contact between live parts and grounded surfaces or between live parts of opposite polarity.
Additional Considerations
  • Working space must not be used for storage and should remain clear at all times .
  • For rows of equipment in electrical rooms, aisles between live parts on both sides must be at least 4 feet wide, increasing with voltage above 600V .
  • Equipment rated over 1,200 amps or wider than 6 feet may require exits at each end or doubling of front clearance to prevent entrapment . Maintaining these clearances ensures compliance with OSHA, NEC, and UL standards, and significantly reduces the risk of electrical accidents and equipment damage.
