What materials are used in aerial optical cables

Aerial optical cables are composed of ultra-pure silica fibers, protective coatings, strength members (aramid or steel), water-blocking elements, and durable outer jackets like polyethylene.Optical Fiber Components

The core of the optical fiber is made of ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium or phosphorus to control the refractive index for efficient light transmission, while the surrounding cladding may be doped with fluorine or boron to lower its refractive index, ensuring total internal reflection and minimal signal loss . Each fiber is coated with a dual-layer UV-cured acrylate: a soft primary coating for mechanical protection and a hard secondary coating for durability . For ribbon cables, a UV-curable resin is used to hold multiple fibers together .

Strength Members

To provide mechanical support and tensile strength, aerial cables include strength members made of aramid yarn (Kevlar) or steel wires. These materials allow the cable to withstand tension when suspended between poles and resist environmental stresses such as wind or ice loading . In some designs, a corrugated steel tape is added to enhance crush resistance .

Water-Blocking and Insulation

Aerial cables often incorporate water-blocking elements, which can be gel-filled or dry, to prevent moisture ingress and protect the fibers from hydrolysis and environmental damage . The fibers are typically housed in loose tubes that are hydrolysis-resistant and provide additional mechanical protection.

Outer Jacket

The outer protective layer is usually made of medium-density polyethylene (PE), which offers excellent environmental resistance, including UV protection. For aerial applications, carbon black is often added to the PE jacket to absorb UV light and prevent degradation . The jacket also provides abrasion resistance and facilitates installation.

Additional Materials

Other materials may include ripcords for easy jacket removal, identification inks for fiber color coding, and chemical additives like glass flakes or borates to enhance performance in specific environments . Some aerial cables may include metallic components for grounding or electrical insulation, depending on the application . In summary, aerial optical cables are engineered with a combination of high-purity optical fibers, protective coatings, strong mechanical members, water-blocking systems, and durable outer jackets to ensure reliable performance in outdoor, pole-mounted installations .
