Computer Core Switch MAC

A core switch uses MAC addresses to forward data frames efficiently within a network, maintaining a MAC table to map devices to switch ports.Core Switch Overview

A core switch is a high-performance network switch that serves as the backbone of a network, connecting multiple devices and other switches to manage traffic efficiently. It is commonly deployed in large networks or data centers to provide high-speed data transfer, often up to 100 Gbps, and to simplify network management by reducing congestion and collision domains ( ).

MAC Address Handling

Core switches operate primarily at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model, where they forward data frames based on MAC addresses ( ). The process involves:

  1. Frame Reception: The switch receives a data frame from a connected device.
  2. MAC Address Extraction: It reads the destination MAC address from the frame header.
  3. MAC Table Lookup: The switch searches its MAC table (also called a forwarding table) to find the port associated with the destination MAC address.
  4. Forwarding:
    • If the MAC address is found, the frame is sent only to the corresponding port.
    • If the MAC address is unknown, the switch floods the frame to all ports except the incoming port.
  5. Table Update: The switch learns the source MAC address from incoming frames and updates its MAC table for future forwarding. This mechanism ensures that data is delivered efficiently to the intended device while minimizing unnecessary traffic ( ).
Benefits of MAC-Based Switching in Core Switches
  • Efficient Traffic Management: By forwarding frames only to the correct port, the switch reduces network congestion.
  • Collision Domain Segmentation: Each port acts as a separate collision domain, improving overall network performance.
  • High-Speed Connectivity: Core switches can handle large volumes of traffic, making them ideal for data centers and enterprise networks ( ).
Layer Considerations

While core switches primarily use MAC addresses for Layer 2 switching, many modern core switches also support Layer 3 routing, allowing them to route traffic between VLANs or subnets while still maintaining MAC-based forwarding for intra-VLAN traffic ( ). In summary, a core switch relies on MAC addresses to forward frames efficiently, maintains a dynamic MAC table to map devices to ports, and can combine Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionalities to optimize network performance.
