Lc fiber optic patch cord process

LC fiber optic patch cords are manufactured through precise steps including fiber preparation, connector assembly, polishing, and rigorous testing to ensure high-performance optical transmission.

Step 1: Fiber Selection and Cutting

The process begins by selecting the appropriate fiber type—single-mode or multi-mode—based on network requirements . The fiber cable is cut to the required length using automated cutting machines for consistency and efficiency . For short pigtails (under 5 meters), the fiber is cut into patch cords; longer fibers are prepared as pigtails for later termination . The cut fibers are coiled and secured with binding wires to prevent damage .

Step 2: Stripping and Cleaning

The outer jacket and buffer coating of the fiber (commonly 0.9mm, 2.0mm, or 3.0mm) are carefully stripped . The exposed fiber is then cleaned with alcohol to remove dust, oils, and residues, ensuring optimal adhesion and signal quality .

Step 3: Connector Assembly

Epoxy is injected into the LC connector ferrule, and the cleaned fiber is inserted into the ferrule . The assembly is cured in an oven to secure the fiber within the connector . After curing, the connector housing and strain relief boot are assembled to protect the fiber and maintain mechanical stability . LC connectors are designed with a 1.25mm ferrule and a push-pull latch mechanism for secure, high-density connections .

Step 4: Polishing and Inspection

The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic polishing machines to achieve a smooth, defect-free surface . Ultrasonic cleaning removes any remaining debris. Each end-face is inspected under a 400x microscope to detect scratches, contamination, or imperfections . This step is critical for minimizing insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) in the optical link .

Step 5: Testing and Quality Assurance

Each LC patch cord undergoes IL and RL testing using calibrated automated equipment to ensure performance meets industry standards . MPO/MTP-specific cords may require additional testing for multi-fiber alignment . All patch cords are 100% tested, traceable, and labeled with serial numbers and test reports to guarantee reliability .

Variants and Applications

LC patch cords come in multiple variants, including standard, uniboot, ultra-low-loss, armored, and mode-conditioning cables . They are widely used in data centers, high-density networks, industrial networks, and FTTA applications, providing compact, high-performance connectivity . Duplex and simplex configurations are available depending on deployment needs .

Summary

The LC fiber optic patch cord manufacturing process emphasizes precision, cleanliness, and rigorous testing. From fiber cutting and stripping to connector assembly, polishing, and performance verification, each step ensures that the final patch cord delivers stable, high-speed optical transmission suitable for modern networking environments .
