RIVO OPTICALSPLICE CLOSURES Technical Inquiry

Revit does not have ladder-shaped cable trays

Revit does not display ladder-type cable trays in some projects because they are system families, not loadable families, and may need to be transferred from the default electrical template or another project. Why Ladder-Type Cable Trays May Be Missing

In Revit, cable trays are system families, similar to ducts and pipes, which means they cannot be loaded like typical Revit families. Only the fittings (bends, T-junctions, crosses) are loadable families . If your project template does not include ladder-type trays, only channel or other default types may appear . Custom templates often have a limited set of cable tray types, which is why ladder trays may be absent.

How to Access Ladder-Type Cable Trays
  1. Use the Default Electrical Template: Start a new project using the Revit default electrical template, which includes all standard cable tray types, including ladder, channel, and trough .
  2. Transfer Project Standards: If you have a project with ladder-type trays, go to the Manage tab → Transfer Project Standards, and select Cable Tray Types to copy them into your current project .
  3. Duplicate and Modify Existing Types: Select an existing cable tray in the project, right-click, and choose Duplicate. You can then assign the desired fittings and adjust parameters to mimic ladder-type trays .
Display Issues in Plan View

Sometimes ladder-type fittings may not appear in plan or section views. To fix this:

  • Select the cable tray fitting in the project.
  • Open the Properties Dialog and turn off "Use Annotation Scale" .
  • If necessary, temporarily change the category to Electrical Equipment, load it into the project, then revert it back to Cable Tray Fittings to ensure visibility .
Customization Limitations

While fittings can be modified for thickness or flange size, straight runs of ladder trays cannot be fully customized in Revit; only the system family parameters like height or width are adjustable . For presentation purposes, some users resort to detailing or keynotes to indicate material thickness.

Summary

Ladder-type cable trays are not missing due to a software error but because of system family limitations and template settings. Using the default electrical template, transferring project standards, or duplicating existing types are the main ways to access and display ladder-type trays in Revit projects. Display issues can often be resolved by adjusting annotation scale or temporarily changing the family category.
