Sealed optical cable

Sealed optical cables are fiber optic cables protected against environmental hazards using hermetic, epoxy, or mechanical sealing methods to ensure reliable data transmission under extreme conditions.Overview

Sealed optical cables are designed to protect fiber optics from moisture, dust, gases, and mechanical stress, ensuring long-term reliability and signal integrity in harsh environments . They are commonly used in defense, aerospace, energy, and industrial applications, where exposure to water, high pressure, vacuum, or temperature extremes can compromise performance .

Sealing Technologies

1. Hermetic Epoxy Seals: Epoxy-based seals create a moisture-tight and gas-tight barrier around the fiber, capable of withstanding shock, vibration, and thermal cycles. These seals can be applied directly to single-mode, multi-mode, ribbon, armored, or mixed fiber cables. Epoxy seals allow flexible configurations, including bulkhead connectors on one or both sides or continuous fiber pass-throughs . 2. Glass-to-Metal Seals: Used for high-reliability applications, these seals provide hermetic protection by bonding glass fibers to metal components, ensuring minimal leakage and high pressure resistance . 3. Mechanical and Heat-Shrink Closures: Mechanical closures use clamps or screws to secure the cable, while heat-shrink closures contract around the fiber when heated, forming a tight, waterproof seal. These methods are cost-effective and durable but may require more effort for maintenance or expansion . 4. Waveguide Seals: For non-metallic fiber cables entering shielded enclosures, waveguide seals provide electromagnetic shielding while maintaining environmental protection. They are suitable for labs, data centers, and military applications .

Performance Characteristics
  • Pressure and Vacuum Resistance: Sealed cables can operate under pressures from moderate levels up to 25,000 psi and vacuums as low as 10^-8 Torr .
  • Temperature Range: Designs can accommodate -200°C to 200°C or customized ranges depending on materials .
  • Insertion Loss: High-quality sealed cables maintain low insertion loss (
