12-core optical cable material

A 12-core optical cable is primarily made of ultra-pure silica glass fibers with protective coatings, buffer layers, strength members, and an outer jacket.Core and Cladding

The central part of each fiber, the core, is typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium to control the refractive index for efficient light transmission. Surrounding the core is the cladding, usually made from fluoride-doped silica, which keeps light confined within the core through total internal reflection .

Protective Coatings and Buffers

Each fiber is coated with a dual-layer UV-cured acrylate: a soft primary coating to cushion the fiber and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection. The fibers are then placed in buffer tubes or ribbons, often made from UV-curable resin, which provide additional protection and maintain fiber alignment .

Strength Members

To withstand pulling forces during installation and environmental stress, 12-core cables include strength members such as aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass rods, or steel elements. These materials prevent fiber breakage and maintain structural integrity .

Outer Jacket

The cable is enclosed in an outer jacket that protects against abrasion, heat, chemicals, UV radiation, and fire. Common jacket materials include polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane, or low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH), chosen based on the installation environment and mechanical requirements .

Optional Components

Some 12-core cables may include water-blocking gels or powders for outdoor use, ripcords for easy jacket removal, and metallic components for grounding or additional protection in specialized applications .

Summary

In essence, a 12-core optical cable combines glass or plastic optical fibers for data transmission with mechanical and environmental protection layers. Glass fibers dominate in telecom, data centers, and long-distance applications due to their low signal loss, while plastic fibers are used for short-range, flexible applications .
